Corporate Capability Statement

The Empowerment Center (EC), a 501©3 non-profit organization, was founded to help communities to empower themselves and discover both personal, familial and communal resources to live, learn and grow, EC is today working in Pittsburgh, PA, Washington, DC and Prince George’s County, Maryland to help individuals to recognize and maximize their social capital, strengthen total wellbeing, improve interpersonal relationships, and alliance with others.  Each first Sunday, EC offers a meaningful morning empowerment meeting (non-religious/non-sectarian) for individuals of all traditions that is therapeutic, humanistic, and wholistic.

 

EC has a cadre of psychologists, social workers, educators, substance abuse counselors, life coaches and other allied human services professionals.

We offer trainings, conferences, and support groups in the following areas:

  • School intervention/truancy
  • Mentoring for children of prisoners, at-risk teens and young adults
  • Workforce development: job training and placement
  • Clinical case management
  • HIV and drug prevention
  • Parent and marriage initiative services
  • Abstinence programming: HIV, STD and pregnancy prevention for youth
  • Prisoner re-entry programming
  • Life coaching and counseling
  • Conference and event planning

ORGANIZATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Empowerment Center (EC), a 501©3 non-profit organization, was founded to help communities empower themselves and discover both personal, familial and communal resources to live, learn and grow. EC has a fourteen-year history of working in Washington, DC and Prince George’s County, Maryland to help individuals recognize and maximize their social capital, strengthen their total wellbeing, improve interpersonal relationships, and strengthen alliances with others. 

Empowerment Center, Inc. is offers spiritual enrichment, and emotional and communal support to residents of the Greater Washington Metropolitan area.  The fellowship was founded by a partnership amongst clergy, human service workers and laypersons devoted to having a contemporary weekly spiritual fellowship experience.  In 2004, The Empowerment Center opened its doors with the mission of promoting the holistic care to individuals and their families with cultural enrichment and spiritual empowerment so that they may live productively with choice and dignity. The goal of the Empowerment Center’s programs is to fully integrate cultural and spiritual practices into the daily lives of people who seek total well-being. 

Empowerment Center (EC), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, was founded in 2004 by Dr. Kristal Owens and other caring professionals with a mission to use  culturally competent and spiritually based human service practices to train and empower families, organizations, and individuals to realize and utilize their inner power to achieve healing and oneness.  EC offers workshops on self-esteem, stress management, conflict resolutions, anger management, real estate, parent education and provides services such as women’s and men’s support groups, individuals, couples and family counseling,

Bibliographical Sketch

 

Kristal Cedell Owens, D.Min., Ph.D. 

As she worked as a human services worker in Washington, D.C. and Maryland, she recognized the need for integrated and holistic services for children, youth and families.  She identified the need for a culturally appropriate, person/family-centered and spiritually-based approach.  Dr. Owens founded Empowerment Center (EC), a 501©3 non-profit organization, to help communities to empower themselves and discover both personal, familial and communal resources to live, learn and grow, EC is today working in Washington, DC, Maryland and Pittsburgh, PA, USA.  Dr. Kristal Owens is a recipient of the 2015 U.S. Congressional Recognition for outstanding and invaluable service to the 4th Congressional District and for improving the quality of life for men, women and families.  

Dr. Owens, a certified parent trainer and licensed practitioner, holds doctorates in Pastoral Care and Counseling and Psychology.  She is holds Master Addiction Counselor certification with the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors –The Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC- AAP). 

Dr. Owens teaches graduate courses in counseling and psychology for Bowie State University, Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea) and Goddard College.  She integrates naturopathy and personal training approaches in her life and work. With over 19 years of combined prison/incarceration and community corrections and substance abuse experience with youth and adults, Dr. Owens has directed five reentry programs (DC Department of Corrections, DC Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, Prince George’s Department of Social Services, and US Probation Service) and four substance abuse programs (funded by DC Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services and Prince George’s County – Department of Social Services.
